Fashion Nugget is Cake's second album, released in 1996, and the record where the Sacramento band's odd little formula clicked for everyone: John McCrea's deadpan talk-singing, Vince DiFiore's mariachi-flavored trumpet, and a rhythm section that could swing from country shuffle to lounge to funk without breaking a sweat. "The Distance" is the one everybody knows, but the deep cuts carry just as much wit, from "Italian Leather Sofa" to "Frank Sinatra" and a bone-dry cover of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive."
