Album Facts
Curtis Mayfield - Curtis Vinyl LP
Hell Below on one side, Move On Up on the other.
- Curtis Mayfield's 1970 solo debut after leaving The Impressions
- Home to 'Move On Up' and 'If There's a Hell Below'
- Rhino pressing of the album that redefined orchestral soul
Curtis is the sound of a man walking away from a hit group to say exactly what he wanted. Mayfield left The Impressions in 1970, and his first solo album opens with "(Don't Worry) If There's a Hell Below, We're All Going to Go," nine minutes of paranoia and wah-wah that reset what a soul record could carry. "Move On Up" is on the other side, all horns and forward motion. Social reporting and orchestral soul in the same breath, and neither one compromised. Street date: July 31.
