Ebonee-Webb were a Memphis funk and soul group who ended up in Japan, and in 1979 they cut the strangest record of their career: Japanese folk standards rebuilt as disco. Chikara Ueda wrote the arrangements, pushing So Run, Yashow Macashow and Smoky Moon through horn charts and a rhythm section that never lets up, while the vocals stay in Japanese. It should not work and it does, because the band plays it straight rather than as a novelty. King Records brings it to vinyl for the first time. Street date: April 16.
