Galt MacDermot (1928-2018) was an award-winning Canadian-American composer and pianist, best known for the Grammy-winning 1967 musical Hair and the Tony-winning Two Gentlemen of Verona. He also scored films like the 1970 blaxploitation classic Cotton Comes to Harlem and released exceptional jazz and funk albums on his own Kilmarnock label, working with players like Bernard Purdie and Idris Muhammad and drawing on his study of African rhythms. His grooves have become beloved by crate diggers and widely sampled across hip-hop. Ghetto Suite, written in 1970 and released in 1972, is one of the most groundbreaking records he issued: a set of songs and poems by Harlem and Bronx schoolchildren set to MacDermot's funky arrangements and sung by Angela Ortega, with rolling bass, snapping drums, and organ virtuosity carrying lyrics that deal plainly and movingly with racism, poverty, and the issues of the day.
