Before Brushfire and the stadium shows, Jack Johnson was a surf filmmaker who scored his own footage. Surfilmusic gathers that work: soundtrack material from the early surf films alongside four-track recordings made much the way the films were, with whatever was at hand. It is the loosest version of him on record, closer to a porch than a studio, and it explains a good deal about why the later albums sound the way they do.
