The Madlib Invazion Music Library Series opens with JJ Whitefield, the Munich multi-instrumentalist behind Poets of Rhythm, Whitefield Brothers, and Karl Hector & the Malcouns. One side leans into Ethiopian jazz, all minor-key horns and unhurried grooves. The other pivots to Italian crime cinema funk, tight and widescreen, with string arrangements by Thomas Lea. Nineteen cuts built the way the old Bruton and DeWolfe libraries were built, meaning they work as background cues, as sample fodder, or simply as a record you put on and let run.
