Album Facts
Magdalena Bay - Mercurial World CD
Synth-pop that loops through time: it opens with The End
- CD edition of Magdalena Bay's debut album, self-produced by the duo
- Opens with The End and closes with The Beginning, a perfect loop
- Features Secrets (Your Fire), Chaeri and You Lose!
Mica Tenenbaum and Matt Lewin wrote, produced, recorded, mixed and mastered Mercurial World entirely on their own, and it shows in every glittering detail. The duo's debut is maximalist synth-pop with a prog streak, built around an abstract theory of time: it opens with The End and closes with The Beginning, so the album loops perfectly when played straight through. In between, Secrets (Your Fire), Chaeri, You Lose! and Hysterical Us pile hook on hook with a playful, slightly unsettling shimmer. Fourteen tracks of big ideas and bigger choruses.
