Michael Andrews scored Donnie Darko in a Los Angeles studio across late 2000, and the film's budget meant he played nearly everything himself: piano, mellotron, mini marimba, xylophone, ukulele and organ. Richard Kelly asked for no guitar and no drums, which turns out to be the whole trick. The cues are small and circular, suspended rather than driven, and they carry the film's particular mood: suburban, slightly wrong, more sad than frightening. The set closes with Mad World, the Tears for Fears cover Andrews cut with Gary Jules, which escaped the film and became its own thing. Everloving presses it on 180g vinyl in a gatefold sleeve.
