Dummy is Portishead's 1994 debut and one of the records that defined Bristol trip-hop. Geoff Barrow and Adrian Utley built crackling, cinematic backdrops from dusty breaks, spy-film samples and turntable scratches, and Beth Gibbons sang over them with a fragile, smoky intensity that still sounds like nobody else. "Sour Times" and "Glory Box" are the famous ones, "Roads" is heartbreak slowed almost to a stop, and "Mysterons" opens the album in a haze of theremin-like tones.
