The Colossus is where RJD2 stopped being only a producer with a sampler. His fourth album brings live players and guest vocalists into music he had previously built alone from records, and the seams are the interesting part: loops give way to a band, a vocal arrives where a hook used to be chopped in. Phonte Coleman and Kenna turn up, and the instrumental stretches hold their own beside them. Released on his own label in 2010, it is the pivot the later records all run from. Pressed on vinyl in a full colour sleeve.
