Ron Trent has been making deep house in Chicago since he was a teenager, and Lift Off is the sound of someone with nothing left to prove. Assembled from sessions recorded across the last decade, Part One is the more energetic half: rich chords, layered percussion, and tempos that shift without ever losing the thread. "Hot Ice" leans toward the glossy end of Wally Badarou territory, "Woman of Color" works a samba-inflected groove, and Leroy Burgess turns up on "Let Me See You Shining" to pull the whole thing toward boogie. Pressed across two LPs by Rush Hour.
