He was fifty six here, with Benisuke Sakai on bass and Yoshihito Eto on drums, and the playing is powerful and wide open while still landing with real precision. He works through Phineas Newborn Jr. and Tommy Flanagan with obvious affection and comes at Wayne Shorter, an early influence, with some heat. A trio at full stretch.
