Album Facts
Shuggie Otis - Freedom Flight (Purple Color) Vinyl LP
Not the famous one. The one with Strawberry Letter 23.
- Purple Color vinyl reissue of Shuggie Otis's 1971 sophomore album Freedom Flight
- Lush, baroque psychedelic soul and hard funk, mostly played by Shuggie himself
- Includes the original Strawberry Letter 23, later a hit for The Brothers Johnson
The son of rhythm-and-blues bandleader Johnny Otis, Shuggie was playing guitar by two and touring with his father's band at eleven. Most people know him for 1974's Inspiration Information; the record worth digging for sits just before it. His 1971 second album, produced by Johnny, lays lush baroque string arrangements over hard funk and funky blues, with Shuggie playing most of the instruments himself and George Duke and Aynsley Dunbar on the sessions. It holds the original "Strawberry Letter 23," which The Brothers Johnson took up six years later. Reissued on purple vinyl.
