Produced by Butch Vig with Corgan, it stacks guitars into towering walls of fuzz, then pulls back for strings and startling tenderness. "Cherub Rock" opens with a roar, "Today" hides a dark lyric inside a bright hook, "Disarm" trades distortion for cello and bells, and "Mayonaise" might be the most beautiful thing the band ever made. A defining alternative rock album of the 90s.
