Sun Ra & His Intergalactic Infinity Arkestra - The Night of the Purple Moon Vinyl LP
Sun Ra, a Moog, and 1970. Less jazz than weather.
- Recorded 1970 with a pared-down Arkestra for Saturn
- Expanded to a double LP by Modern Harmonic
- Sun Ra on Rocksichord and Moog throughout
A small-group Sun Ra record, and one of the odder entries in a catalog full of them. Cut in 1970 with a pared-down Arkestra, Night of the Purple Moon puts Ra at the Rocksichord and Moog for long stretches, chasing tones that sound less like jazz than like weather. Danny Davis and John Gilmore handle the horns; the rhythm section stays loose and unhurried throughout. It is quieter than the big Arkestra statements and stranger for it, closer to private music than performance. Modern Harmonic expand it here across two LPs with material from the original Saturn sessions.
