Detour is the first album Terumasa Hino cut after moving to Who-Ring, and it points straight at the danceable urban contemporary sound coming out of New York at the time. Lalah Hathaway produced part of it and takes lead on several vocal tracks, which makes this the most pop-facing entry in a very long discography without softening what Hino does. His cornet and flugelhorn lines wind through the choruses with that rich, glossy tone he never lost. As eighties production gets reappraised, this one keeps coming back up.
