Submarine is The Marias at their most exposed. Maria Zardoya and Josh Conway made the band's second album after their romantic relationship ended, and the record lives in that strange, submerged aftermath: hazy synths, brushed drums, Zardoya's voice slipping between English and Spanish and never rising above a murmur. 'Run Your Mouth' and 'Echo' carry the singles, but the album works best taken whole, as a slow drift through rooms someone has just left. This RSD Essential pressing splits the disc half clear and half sea blue.
