Maxinquaye is the 1995 debut album from English rapper and producer Tricky, made after he grew frustrated with his limited role in Massive Attack. Recorded mostly at his home studio in London with Martina Topley-Bird as the main vocalist, and produced with Mark Saunders, it uses dub techniques and heavily altered samples to build a slow, smoky sound that pulls from hip-hop, soul, rock, reggae and experimental music. Overcome, Black Steel, Hell Is Round the Corner and Aftermath explore dark themes of desire and decline. Titled after his late mother, Maxine Quaye, it is a trip-hop landmark.
