Two years on from Nell' Ora Blu, their synth-heavy score for a giallo film that never existed, the Cambridge band swing back toward guitars. Shapes of Midnight is a macabre concept record drawing on Edgar Allan Poe's The Masque of the Red Death, tracked live to tape at Abbey Road through 1960s EMI desks. Eight songs of what they call the Evil Beatles sound: downtuned fuzz, two-part harmonies, twin-guitar lines and paperback horror lyrics, led by House by the Grave, When Evil Wakes and Psycho on the Loose. The seventh Uncle Acid album, here on standard black vinyl.
