A vibrant compilation of Andean Peruvian chicha drawn from the vaults of Discos Fernando Arias (Difa), the Lima label founded around 1970 that was crucial to the production and spread of Peruvian tropical music. This is the "carretero style," named for Peru's Central Highway that crosses the country from coast to jungle through the Andes, defined by sudden shifts from ballad to fast, aggressive tropical grooves, electric guitar lines drenched in fuzztone, reverb and wah-wah, and the plaintive, melancholic vocal style characteristic of Andean music. Ten essential cuts for any cumbia, chicha or international crate-digging shelf.
