Kon Ichikawa's 1976 adaptation of Seishi Yokomizo's mystery is a landmark of Japanese cinema, and Yuji Ohno's score is a large part of why it still unsettles. Ohno, better known outside Japan for the Lupin the Third music, writes here with real restraint: warm melodic themes that keep sliding into something colder, orchestral passages that hold tension rather than release it.
